BECOME A MENTOR

Make a difference in the life of a child! In just one hour a week during the school year and on school grounds you can make a difference in the life a child in second through ninth grades at the Dakota School District.

The In-School Mentoring Program at FHN Family Counseling Center is seeking prospective mentors from the community. Training and ongoing guidance and support are provided.   Mentors act as friend, role model and assist students who need to improve self-esteem, learn to set attainable goals, improve communication skills, and improve decision-making skills. The mentor relationship consists of a one-hour weekly visit in the school through the school year.

If you are interested in being a mentor or would like more information please contact Sharon Mockridge, Community Educator at FHN Family Counseling Center, at 815-599-7344.  This is a great way to help the community – are you up for the challenge?  “Start Something” today – volunteer.

TURN OFF THE TV AND READ

Our next Turn Off the TV and Read Night is Tuesday, January 31st.  All families are encouraged to read as a family at home instead of watching TV.  Look for the postcard to be coming home to fill out January 31st and return to school to pick out a free book!  All students, K through 6th grade are encouraged to bring the completed card back on Wednesday, February 1st.  The card must be returned, signed by an adult, in order for the student to receive a free book.  We have had a tremendous response to our reading nights!  Help make January's the biggest yet!

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I welcome you to Dakota Elementary School.  We are excited about starting the 2011-2012 school year.  It is our goal at Dakota Elementary to provide quality instruction while maintaining a safe and caring environment.

We maintain high expectations and standards for our students, both academically and behaviorally.  We all work together, staff, parents, students, and the community, to make Dakota Elementary the best learning environment possible.

Dakota Elementary continues to build a collaborative environment and I encourage you to visit throughout the school year.  Parents are encouraged to become involved in their student’s learning and there are various opportunities available to become involved.

It is my goal to ensure every student becomes a life-long learner, making positive contributions in our ever-changing world.  I encourage parents and community members to use the resources offered on our website.  I look forward to beginning a new school year.  I know together, we can continue to achieve greatness at Dakota Elementary.

Crystal Thorpe, Principal

Dakota Elementary Earns Academic Excellence Minimize

A total of 438 schools achieved Academic Excellence Awards, continuing the strong trend of recent years. Dakota Elementary School was among the 438 schools.  Academic Excellence criteria require that 90% of elementary students and 85% of high school students meet or exceed standards on state tests. Further, these schools must demonstrate excellence for at least consecutive three years.  We are proud to earn this award and look forward to sustaining academic excellence!

School safety is a number one priority at Dakota Elementary.  If you are dropping off or picking up your child(ren), please remember the following:

  • Campus drive is one way before school.  Please follow the traffic pattern behind the high school to exit the campus.
  • If you are entering the building with your son/daughter, please park in the parking lot rather than along the curb.
  • Please use the marked crosswalk area to go the the school building.
  • Cars use the horseshoe parking/drop area before and after school.  Buses drop children off in front of the school and pick them up in front of the school.
  • DO NOT PARK in no parking zones.  Please park your vehicle within the yellow parking spots in the parking lots or lower lots.
  • Please remind your child not to walk between the buses either before or after school.  It is a safety issue, one we are trying to teach our younger students.  If a student sees an older student or parent do this, it can be modeled.  Make sure you are modeling the correct arrival procedure so all our children are safe.
  • Please do not park in the horseshoe along the grass or sidewalk; parking causes the traffic to be three wide across and students are walking in between cars.  If you want to park, please pull in to one of the parking spots in the horseshoe or in the parking lot and walk your child(ren) into the building.
  • Use of cellphones in school zones is prohibited by Illinois Law.  Campus Drive is a school zone.  Please keep our children safe; abide by the law.

If we all follow the above reminders, Dakota Elementary can ensure the safety of all.
